Along with many schools across the city and county, the girls of Eglantine have been taking part in Discover Cork Schools’ Heritage Project. Led by Cllr Kieran McCarthy (Ind.), this project encourages students to celebrate, highlight, debate and create fresh approaches to our cultural heritage.
This year’s theme is ‘Living Through History’ which is particularly appropriate given the unprecedented times in which we find ourselves.
The centenary offered a great opportunity to learn about events unique to the city of Cork. Jane and Lucy from 5th Class said, “We chose the Burning of Cork because we love learning about the war and have family connections. We especially enjoyed listening to the interesting stories of Flor O’Leary (Jane’s grandad).” Ellie chose Tomás MacCurtain and Terence McSwiney because “it was their 100th anniversary of their deaths this year. I never knew they were actually close friends even though their upbringings and even their deaths were very different.”
The School Calendar has been finalised for next year’s school year, subject of course, to any further guidance from the Department of Education, the HSE or the NPHET. Click link below to open:
Rather than calling our gnome ‘Agent 61’ all the time, we’re asking our girls to come up with a better name to use-(like naming your Elf on the Shelf!) All suggestions to: schoolgarden@eglantine.ie Go on, give it a go!
We have just heard that a Garden Gnome, Agent 61, has been appointed to our school garden to help get it ready until we are all back in school again! Follow his work on our school Twitter: @EglantineNS
We are all looking forward to the Schoolovision on February 14th. The girls are practising their dance moves and rehearsing their songs, all written by the girls themselves. Best of luck to everyone. A special thanks to Mrs. Rosie O’Shea who is co-ordinating the whole event.
